  • How is Segreti di Sicilia Grana Grossa Sea Salt produced?

    Our coarse-grained sea salt comes from the historic salt pans of Trapani. We take care of the scrupulous selection and packaging. We only choose salt from small producers who follow safe and sustainable production processes, according to the centuries-old tradition of the ancient Sicilian salt workers. In the areas of Trapani, on the coast towards Marsala, through a system of locks, canals and tanks, the evaporation of sea water allows the collection of salt crystals which are then cleaned and stored.

  • The properties of sea salt

    Whole sea salt is rich in magnesium, potassium and iodine, important elements for the correct functioning of the thyroid. It retains most of the substances coming from sea water. Not only magnesium, potassium and iodine but also sulphates, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc and other substances useful for the prevention of many diseases.

Sea salt is obtained from the evaporation of sea water. It is distinguished from rock salt (or rock salt) which is instead obtained in salt mines by extraction from the rock. In Sicily both sea salt and rock salt are produced.

Sea salt can be recognized not so much by its color (it is white like refined salt) but by its humidity. The cause of the humidity is the high percentage of magnesium which is maintained much longer in whole salt than in that processed by the food industry.

Sicilian salt is both of marine and mineral origin. The marine one is produced within the Saline di Trapani and Paceco oriented nature reserve. Here there are systems that date back to 1200 and demonstrate how ancient salt production is in this area. The area is also very fascinating in terms of landscape due to the presence of ancient windmills.
