    Made in Italy. Primo BIO is produced on the Iblei Mountains, at 350-450 meters above sea level, from centuries-old olive groves grown organically and exposed to the south. Mainly Tonda Iblea variety.

  • How Primo BIO was born, the organic extra virgin par excellence

    Primo BIO is not only an excellent extra virgin olive oil, it is also the symbol of our sustainability project. Because it comes from crops that we manage with full respect for biodiversity and safeguarding the stability of agrosystems. In fact, we grow organically, we do not support intensive agriculture and we produce mainly from traditional olive groves and centuries-old plants. We prefer native cultivars that are less productive but capable of producing very high quality oils. In our olive groves there are also spontaneous tree species such as carob trees, almond trees, oaks and poplars which help to keep our agroecosystem healthy.

Together with Primo DOP, our Primo BIO has always been on the podium of the main national and foreign competitions and has collected many awards. Constantly present in the prestigious guides on extra virgin olive oils and winner several times at Biol, one of the main competitions in the sector which compares the best organic oils from the various continents. Primo DOP and Primo BIO have reached the finals and won at least once all the national and international competitions dedicated to olive oil excellence. From the Olive Oil Competition in Los Angeles to the Feinschmecker Olivenöltest - Olio Award in Zurich. Furthermore, I am always reported in the main gastronomic guides, such as Slow Food and Gambero Rosso.

The Tonda Iblea olive variety, one of those that gives life to the prized Monti Iblei PDO, is typical of the vast limestone plateau of south-eastern Sicily which is also our home. We are in the hinterland of the provinces of Syracuse and Ragusa: here, olive trees of this variety have grown spontaneously for millennia among vast plateaus and deep valleys. Centuries-old plants are predominant and alternate with new plants, covering the hills together with carob trees, almond trees and vines. Together with the Moresca, another typical variety of this territory, the Tonda Iblea dominates this territory and produces an oil with a balanced, rich and tasty flavour, intense and persistent, with an unmistakable hint of tomato and fresh grass.

It is the native variety of the Iblei Mountains, in south-eastern Sicily, and has grown spontaneously on this island for millennia.
Organically grown olive trees of the Tonda Iblea variety are generally large and vigorous, with dull gray leaves. The fruits are large (think on average 6 grams) and have a good ratio between pulp and stone, in fact the oil yield is good (between 16% and 20%). For a long time this olive was used as a table product. The fine oil obtained has an intense fruitiness and a bouquet of various scents, from tomato to almond to cut grass. It is rich in polyphenols and vitamin E.

Extra virgin olive oils from the Tonda Iblea variety are produced in the eastern part of Sicily, in particular in the provinces of Ragusa and Syracuse. The Iblei mountains, which give the area its name, are located between the two provinces and the olive trees, including those of the Tonda Iblea variety, represent the typical and most widespread vegetation.

Primo Bio can be recognized by the appropriate BIO mark on the label. It is the guarantee that the product comes from plants grown organically. We dedicate the same care to them as to all the rest of our crops. Because, beyond the BIO brand, all our products comply with our environmental sustainability project.
